How do we stop the Wingnuts in Texas?

After reading an extremely well thought out diary on Texas's prop 2 by DyspepTex I felt the need to echo the sentiments contained therein and desperately call on my fellow kossaks to help form a counter strategy. We all know these kinds of issues such as Texas's "Gay-Marriage" Prop 2 are designed to rally the wingnut base. With the Texas and national GOP shamelessly courting churches directly how do we counter this? By demonizing gays in this instance they are also able to mobilize the lowest common denominator, stupidity and intolerance. While not at all suggesting we stoop to such lows, how do we accomplish a similar effect with our base? How do we get our people out, and keep theirs at home swilling natural light, dipping copenhagen, watching nascar and procreating inbred Wal-mart shoppers?

Thinking outloud, I could surmise that this is part of the problem, an utter lack of understanding of how to appeal to such people. I am aware that I am also guilty of stereotyping here, this may be another problem. How do we appeal to the "gut-level", "common sense" voter? And where are we to find our own army of fanatical bible zombies? My first thought is to directly approach churches, however our own Democratic Party outside of Travis county is admittedly pretty weak, and I know from experience trying to coordinate voter registration drives in the 04 election that its a bit difficult to get the attention of the Texas Democratic Party. That's another problem, the GOP actually listens to their base. How are we to replicate that in our party here in Texas? I'm just thinking outloud, I would heartily welcome any suggestions or ideas.
